Herod the Great

Im quite fascinated and interested in history, especially those that way back the time of Christ. Adding some stuff to your brain apart from what was fed by the bible makes you more curious and want to dig deeper.

Hubby was complaining last Good Friday that there were no religious/spiritual program on in telly. [in my mind, i reckon, this is how aussies commemorate holy week]. Well, it was already Easter when we had our little share of the show that we expected to see since the start of the week. The last bit was about Herod the Great.

We know Herod as the Jewish King who ordered the killings of the infants when Christ was born.

Matthew 2:16-18 (New International Version)
16When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: 18"A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."[

The program was related by historians and apart from the bits a pieces of exaggeration, which makes you think they were actually present during that times not just making speculations and educational guesses of what had happened based on the artifacts, the show was superbly discussed and illustrated.

Herod was just a commoner that turned to be a great icon in the Roman times. He was born and raised in Idumea to an Idumean father who later was converted to Judaism and became founder of the Herodian Dynasty. He became governor at the age of 25. He was appointed King of the Jews by Mark Anthony and later show his allegiance to Octavius - after the latter defeated Mark Anthony.

During his reign, he built the Temple of Jerusalem, the fortress in Herodian - the first ever man-made mountain with a palace on top of it, and a man-made harbour in Ceasaria - all of which was Roman inspired to show his loyalty to the latter. His architectural success was viewed as a political triumph and a show that Judea was prosperous.

Despite all these parade of his talent he was still remembered as the cruel king. He had ordered the death of the old Judean King when he was positioned to power, the killings of the high priests, the death [it was shown as an accident in the pool] of his brother-in-law - the latter being a threat to his position as a king, and even the death of his wife if he will die. He loved his wife [Mirriamne II] so much that he didn't want her with other man after him.

Fast forward, Herod suffered acute diseases in his later years - shortness of breath, severe stomach pain and the most-that-will-make-you-puke, worms were coming out of his body. In ancient beliefs, these illnesses were viewed to be the bad carma for what he had done but in todays medical research, he was said to be suffering from heart failure, kidney problem and the worm was caused by the flies that infested his infected body, leaving maggots.

Most if not all dying people, repent when they were in their death bed, but Herod was still Herod-like. In between pains and agony, he left a message that all the high priests will be killed right after he die - the mourning widows will make a spectacle that they were grieving for him.

Although being Herod "the Great", he died alone and mourned by no one.

Magnificent Castle

Looks familiar? This is Neuschwanstein Castle [New Swan Stone Castle], constructed by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Germany... which inspired the design of the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland. The inspiration for the Cinderella Castles at other Disney parks is sometimes incorrectly attributed to this.

This castle was built as a retreat and as a homage to Richard Wagner (musician), the Kings inspiring muse.

It is said to be also a candidate for the new seven wonders of the world.

A place not to miss if you're visiting Europe, indeed!

*find it so wonderful for such a great architectural piece to be constructed in a perilous site
**post inspired by the travel show which was aired last night

What Do You Do?

... when it is raining or just gloomy and about to rain?

I love...
  1. donning my pjs, jump on the bed and have a good cuddle/snuggle to my pillow [Hubs if he's available ;)]
  2. surf the net of anything, chat with friends, blog or do any net thingie.
  3. watch an interesting movie with a good cup of cuppa.
  4. think, reminisce, be mushy, or just sit in one corner and feel the nature takes it course.
  5. play under the rain - when i was a kid [i miss this sooo much].
  6. read, read, read.
  7. do cross-word puzzles [new addition].
  8. be oblivious of the things that's happening around me... zzzzzz.

I could do a lot more, if im not drown in my own slumber. ;))

It has been gloomy for the past 4 days... switching from overcast to drizzle to dogs and cats rain. But I refuse to let the mood hit home. I am happy, yeah, coz I wont be sweating at the middle of the day, I don't need to water the plants. The laundry can wait.

*I hope Hubby can't read this as he doesn't want it to rain. Not good for business. =))

A Unique Wedding

It is already wonderful that she's an environmentalist by heart by not owning a car but it is more amazing to know that she walks her talk even on her big day. What a true blue environmentalist?!

One of the story that can change the world. A nice and timely read now that the effects of global warming are felt everywhere.

The carbon neutral wedding

While some brides dream of a white wedding, Danielle Cole, of Sydney, was intent on ensuring her big day was as green as possible.

"My fiance, Angus, and I are very environmentally conscious, so we tried to find a venue close to public transport and we didn't use disposable plates or cutlery."

But, unbeknownst to Danielle, her friend Madeleine Lyons, who is also director of environmental group Climate Friendly, went one step further and arranged for the wedding to be climate neutral.

"It was such a great gift. We were so excited when we were presented with a certificate at the wedding," enthuses Danielle.

To neutralise carbon emissions from the wedding, Madeleine first calculated the volume of greenhouse gases created. "Basically we found out how guests were travelling to the wedding - by car, plane or bus. We also factored in the electricity used at the wedding and the emissions created from transporting the food to the venue."

Overall the wedding produced a huge 21 tonnes of carbon emissions - and about half of these were generated by one flight from London.

To offset the greenhouse gases, about 25 guests contributed $10 each, which went towards clean energy projects - such as wind farms. Essentially this meant that the guests were funding projects that would prevent the same amount of fossil fuel emissions as the wedding itself.

"Our friends all know that we're very conscious of the environment," says Danielle. "I'm not religious but if there's anything that guides my actions it's the environment. I don't own a car and I always catch public transport, for instance, so this was really the perfect gift."

Story from here.

I couldnt stop wishing that we all could be like them in our own little way.

Filling Lunch

I just had my lunch and it really filled me. It was sort of like a breakfast meal.. but I didn't have a brunch kasi I had my breakfast between 7 and 8 this morning. I fried the left-over from yesterday rice, 'yong simple fried rice lang.. with salt and oil, then I fried the already-cooked slice of silverside corned beef, 'yong malutong na pagka-fry and fresh tomato. Yum! I ate them na nakakamay lang, kaya feel na feel ko ang pagkain. While I was about to fry the rice, sabi ko di ko ipapa-fry lahat. There were more than two servings but then reconsidered because I dont want to fry some again later. (Btw, I like it fried if "bahaw" na yong kanin.) Yon pala, hindi enough yong one serving ng rice for me. Mahirap naman kung bitin ang pagkain. I have some left-over here beside me, but I am planning to eat it again after this post. Hehehe. Natatakam talaga ako. And I eat more while reading or facing the computer. If I am just alone here at home, I already made it a habit to eat in front of the computer or telly kasi nakakawalang gana kumain alone, db? But if you're doing something, you are not aware that you've eaten the whole lot already.

These days, if I am not out with Hubs or surfing the net or watching teevee, you can always find me at the kitchen making or cooking something. Kahit simple recipe lang for an amateur and still-learning-to-cook me, it's a big accomplishment if I had cooked a meal and it tasted like what I expected it to be. :)) Pregnancy makes me love to eat and of course cook, which I enjoyed. (Btw Cess, I made the peach jam na yesterday and I think, it tasted yummy - that is for me. There's nobody here to try it kasi my Hubs doesn't like sweet on his bread. But I just made enough for myself and I already put some of it in pikelets instead of honey. - Thanks really for the heads up.)

***

I felt really bad after Hubs left this morning. After breakfast, I went out to water the plants and he was getting his stuff ready. I expected him to leave just as soon as he finishes but he didn't. I took my time in tending to the plants and I just knew when I was already finished that he was actually waiting for me to go with him. I thought, I made myself clear yesterday that I am not going out with him because I am experiencing an uncomfortable pain in my lower left belly. I don't want to aggravate it by sitting in the car the whole day. Anyway, after sending him off, I vaccuumed the office to make up for not going out with him. But, it really made me feel bad... you know the feeling that you want to go with him but you just cant because you feel sick? Haaayyyyy!

He Did It Again

In the recently concluded Australian Open tour, Roger Federer, for the third time bagged the championship title. I think, it wasn't easy for him to win, though, he was the next man to win the championship in three sets straight since 1972, against Fernando Gonzales. The latter who has the strongest forehand in the tour and had beaten Rafa, Haas, Hewitt, to name a few. I reckon, Gonzales is the Roger F of the next tennis generation, after Roger F reign. ;)

Oh, I just like the man for his great attitude on and off court.. the reason mainly why he is well-loved by the crowd.

Just found this baby photo of Roger. He's adorable.
